Diamond Jubilee: Party-goers across UK celebrate occasion

People from across the UK are celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with thousands of street parties and events.

Almost 9,500 road closure applications were submitted for England and Wales across the whole weekend, with Hertfordshire topping the street party list with 451 event licences requested.

In Scotland, Edinburgh hosted 10 street parties on Sunday, while in Northern Ireland a special tea party was held in Belfast's City Hall.
BBC teams across the UK have been speaking to people out celebrating.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Celebrations are taking place across Scotland to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee

The Jubilee Pageant was broadcast live on a big screen in Festival Square, Edinburgh.
The capital was understood to have had a third of all of Scotland's street party applications with ten official street parties taking place in the city.
Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond said people up and down the country would take time over the weekend "to reflect on the contribution of their monarch to Scottish life as they enjoy the variety of events on offer".
He added: "Her Majesty has been, and continues to be, a great friend to Scotland, offering her subjects unparalleled dedication and integrity as she has carried out her duties throughout her reign."

Ron Bridle, Goring and Streatley, Oxfordshire and Berkshire

Party organiser Ron Bridle said the wet weather had not dampened spirits

A kilometre of tables were laid out for 4,000 people spanning the two counties, with organisers hoping to claim a world record.
Thousands of red, white and blue ponchos were shipped in to combat the wet conditions.
Organiser Ron Bridle said: "It's quite an incredible event, it's been nine months in the planning.
"It started off with a couple of people around the table and here we are nine months later with 300 people organising it.
"The parade started from one county and a piper from the other side of the river bridge joined them outside the rectory gardens to start the whole proceedings off in a Jubilee parade service."

Andrea Knott, Halifax, West Yorkshire

In Halifax, Andrea Knott with her daughter Eva and her friend Kira Horsfall decided to stay at home due to the weather.
She said: "The weather has changed our plans today.
"Instead of visiting Howarth we have decided to stay in and have a Jubilee tea party and the bun making has just begun.
"The kids round here have really hyped it up, they are all in red, white and blue. They are loving the face painting."

Steven Birch, Battersea Park, London

Steven Birch said his unusual hat and cardboard cut-out were attracting a lot of attention

Crowds trying to get into Battersea Park for Jubilee celebrations were delayed by more than half an hour after problems with ticket scanners.
Steven Birch, 48, from Bakewell, Derbyshire, found himself by the riverside wearing the perfect "umbrella hat" accessory for the weather conditions.
He said: "I had a pair of union jack shorts and a T-shirt but unfortunately the weather didn't hold out.
"The amount of times I've been asked where I got this hat, I could have sold it 10 times over."
Gareth and Gemma Ayre, from Durham, brought their 13-month-old daughter Sophia Florence who "screamed all the way from Canary Wharf" and then fell asleep.
The couple said they were looking forward to the Jubilee competition to build the tallest cake in Battersea Park.

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

A cake for the party at Rosehill Street in Cheltenham was protected from the elements

Proceeds from a Jubilee street party in Cheltenham will be donated to people affected by a suspected gas explosion.
The party took place in Rosehill Street close to where a house was destroyed in the blast on 10 May.
Michelle Garland, who lived in one of the neighbouring houses that had to be demolished, said the fundraisers had been "kind and generous".
"I'm incredibly grateful. It's humbling to see people who want to come out and help and care for people in their community."
The street party had already been arranged before the explosion happened.
Organiser Ellie McGuffie said: "We want to celebrate that everybody came out of this alive so we want to all get together and have a rip roaring do."
More than £600 had been raised already.

Tricia Heath, Morecambe, Lancashire

Five hundred and fifty tables were laid out along Morecambe promenade

The rain did not dampen spirits in Morecambe where a Jubilee party took place along a mile-and-a-half of the promenade.
Five hundred and fifty tables were stretched out from the Polo Tower to Morecambe Bay Lifeboat Station.
Organiser Tricia Heath said: "Fingers crossed the weather will get better but it won't stop our party."
People had een asked to book tables for £5, with the money going to Help for Heroes and St John's Hospice.

Wales

Children from Clase Primary School, Swansea, celebrated with a Big Lunch despite the rain

Hundreds of street parties were held across Wales with more than 300 applications for street closures - 100 more than for last year's royal wedding.
In Rhondda Cynon Taf, south Wales, communities celebrated at 58 parties, while a castle picnic and a proms in the park was staged at Powis Castle near Welshpool in mid Wales.
In Carmarthenshire, a fireworks display will be held at Prince Charles's Welsh home, Llwynywermod, near Myddfai.
And the village of Rhosneigr on Anglesey, near where Prince William is based as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, is staging a four-day Diamond Jubilee celebration, similar to one held there in 1953 to mark the Queen's Coronation.
But not everyone will be hanging out the bunting. Anti-monarchist group Republic, which wants to replace the Queen with a democratically elected head of state, is staging demonstrations over the weekend.

Crowds gathered at Newbury's Picnic in the Park event with stalls, live music and rides on canal boats.
Organiser Gabrielle McGarvey said: "It's taken a huge amount of work, we've got three days of activities and today is the central bit.
"We've got lots of stalls, food stalls, dancing and judo exhibitions so we're hoping it'll be a wonderful day."
Mayor of Newbury Arthur Johnson added: "It's an absolutely brilliant day for Newbury."
Guest of honour was later revealed to be local resident Melinda Messenger.

Valerie Watson, Toxteth, Liverpool

Valerie Watson said the best tables were put out at the last minute

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Liverpool for the Big Jubilee Lunch despite the wet weather.
Valerie Watson, from Toxteth, said they did not let the rain stop their plans.
"People are making the sandwiches, we are hanging out the decorations.
"We've held off putting the best tables out until the last minute but nobody lost faith."
The party in Carter Street, Toxteth, was expected to attract more than 200 people and included a barbecue, face painting and outdoor games.
Ms Watson added: "We are get-together people so we'll get out there. We won't let the weather stop us - we are still going to have a party."

Belfast, Northern Ireland

The Very Reverend John Mann acknowledged the Queen's "60 years of devotion to others"

The Dean of Belfast has paid tribute to the Queen during a service at St Anne's Cathedral in the city.
While Belfast's new Lord Mayor Gavin Robinson attended a number of street parties, culminating in afternoon tea at the city hall.
The guests included couples celebrating their 60th wedding anniversaries this year.
At a service of thanksgiving at the Cathedral, the Very Reverend John Mann said the Jubilee honoured the Queen's "60 years of devotion to others".
He said: "The Queen reminds us of who we are, of what our values should be, where lies the path of duty... and how she, in the hard daily grind, even in the mid-80s of life, can demonstrate so tellingly, that duty is above the seeking of personal pleasure."

Corrine Cappell, Felixstowe, Suffolk

A competition for the best Jubilee-decorated beach hut went ahead

The Gala in the Gardens event in Felixstowe, which was due to take place on the seafront, was moved to the relative warmth of the leisure centre.
Corrine Cappell, seafront gardens manager, said: "Sadly it's very windy and wet in the gardens, so this is a damage limitation exercise.
"I hope people come and support it, as a lot of people have put in a lot of effort."

Suffolk County Council said it had approved 80 road closure applications, with many more parties expected to take place in cul de sacs, village greens and no-through roads.

Planet Venus is putting on a show for sky watchers by moving across the face of the Sun as viewed from Earth.

The transit is a very rare astronomical event that will not be seen again for another 105 years.
Observers in north and central America, and the northern-most parts of South America saw the transit begin just before local sunset.
The far northwest of America, the Arctic, the western Pacific, and east Asia will witness the entire passage.
The UK and Europe, the Middle East, and eastern African must wait for local sunrise to see the closing stages of the transit.
Venus appears as a small black dot moving slowly but surely across the solar disc.

Special events provided safe ways for the public to see the transit

Some of the best pictures of the event have been provided by the US space agency's (Nasa) Solar Dynamics Observatory, which studies the Sun from a position 36,000km above the Earth.
"We get to see Venus in exquisite detail because of SDO's spatial resolution," said astrophysicist Dr Lika Guhathakurta.
"SDO is a very special observatory. It takes images that are about 10 times better than a high-definition TV and those images are acquired at a temporal cadence of every 10 seconds. This is something we've never had before."
Many citizens keen to get a view of the transit themselves have been attending special events at universities and observatories where equipment for safe viewing has been set up. For others, internet streams have provided an easy way to follow Venus's slow trek.
Scientists have been observing the transit to test ideas that will help them probe Earth-like planets elsewhere in the galaxy, and to learn more about Venus itself and its complex atmosphere.

Venus transits occur four times in approximately 243 years; more precisely, they appear in pairs of events separated by about eight years and these pairs are separated by about 105 or 121 years.
The reason for the long intervals lies in the fact that the orbits of Venus and Earth do not lie in the same plane and a transit can only occur if both planets and the Sun are situated exactly on one line.
This has happened only seven times in the telescopic age: in 1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and 2004.
Once the latest transit has passed, the next pair will not occur until 2117 and 2125.

The phenomenon has particular historical significance. The 17th- and 18th-Century transits were used by the astronomers of the day to work out fundamental facts about the Solar System.
Employing a method of triangulation (parallax), they were able to calculate the distance between the Earth and the Sun - the so-called astronomical unit (AU) - which we know today to be about 149.6 million km (or 93 million miles).
This allowed scientists to get their first real handle on the scale of things beyond Earth.

Timing of the transit

• The timings given here are calculated for a viewing position at the Earth's centre
• Venus is seen to first touch (1) the edge of the Sun's disc at 22:09 GMT (23:09 BST)
• It is completely on the disc (2) by 22:27 GMT (23:27 BST). The transit lasts over six hours
• Come Wednesday by 04:31 GMT (05:31 BST), Venus is touching the disc's far side (3)
• At 04:49 GMT (05:49 BST), Venus has left the disc (4). The next transit is on 11 December 2117

Modern instrumentation now gives us very precise numbers on planetary positions and masses, as well as the distance between the Earth and the Sun. But to the early astronomers, just getting good approximate values represented a huge challenge.

This is not to say the 2012 Venus transit will be regarded as just a pretty show with no interest for scientists.
Planetary transits have key significance today because they represent one of the best methods for finding worlds orbiting distant stars.
Nasa's Kepler telescope, for example, is identifying thousands of candidates by looking for the tell-tale dips in light that accompany a planet moving in front of its host sun.
These planets are too far away to ever be visited by spacecraft, but scientists can learn something about them from the way the background star's light is affected as it passes through the planetary atmosphere.
And observing a transiting Venus, which has a known atmospheric composition, provides a kind of benchmark to support these far-flung investigations.
But Venus itself has come in for scrutiny. Scientists have been using the event to probe the middle layers of the Venusian atmosphere - its mesosphere.
They have been looking for a very thin arc of light, called the aureole, which can only be seen when Venus appears to just touch the edge of the Sun's disc at ingress and egress.
The brightness and thickness of the aureole depends on the density and temperature of the atmospheric layers above Venus's cloud tops.
Observations of the aureole are being combined with data from Europe's Venus Express spacecraft in orbit around the planet to provide information on high-altitude winds.
The Venusian atmosphere experiences super-rotation. That is - the whole atmosphere circles the planet in four Earth days, on a body that turns around just once in 243 Earth days.

Transit of Venus highlights age of wondrous scientific activity

(CNN) -- Tonight, Tuesday, June 5, as the sun set on the East Coast, the planet Venus began its "transit" across the face of the sun. Pay close attention: Barring a miracle of future medicine, this is your only chance to witness such a crossing. The next one will take place in 2117.

That's because the transit of Venus is basically an eclipse, just like when the moon passes across the face of the sun. It requires a close alignment of the sun, Venus and Earth. The moon is not nearly as large as Venus but it is so close to Earth that its disk covers nearly the entire solar disk. Venus, on the other hand, is so far away that it appears as a small black dot covering about 3% of the solar disk.

Venus orbits the sun every 226 Earth-days, compared to our 365 days, so the two planets sort of pass each other relatively often. But their orbits lie in slightly canted planes, so the alignment needed for an eclipse happens only once a century or so.

 

 

Nearly 500 years ago, Johannes Kepler figured out the orbits of the planets using Newton's law of gravity. He understood that Venus was 30% closer to the sun than Earth, and that Mars was 50% more distant. But he didn't know how to measure the distance from any planet to the sun.

A century after Kepler, Edmund Halley, of comet fame, proposed measuring the distance from Earth to the sun using a series of observations of the transit of Venus from widely separated points on Earth.

Halley did not live to measure the next transit of Venus, in 1761, but others mounted worldwide expeditions that did the trick. The best measurements of that transit were made by Jeremiah Dixon and Charles Mason, of Mason-Dixon-line fame. Today, we can measure interplanetary distances far more accurately than the transit method allows, though amateurs can still contribute their measurements using an app from Astronomers Without Borders. As for the specialness of the transit, well, it's rarer than passages of Mr. Halley's famous comet.

The transit of Venus can't be observed with the Hubble Space Telescope because the extreme brightness of the sun would destroy the telescope and its instruments. But astronomers have figured out a clever way for Hubble to "observe" the effects of the transit on the light from the sun: by looking at the moon. The moon "shines" in reflected sunlight, so it is basically a weak mirror that is safe for Hubble to observe.

The reason astronomers want to observe reflected sunlight during the transit of Venus is to test whether they can detect the faint imprint of passage of the sun's light through the atmosphere of Venus. They have used similar observations of more distant stars to find "exoplanets" (planets orbiting stars other than the sun) and in a few rare cases, to measure characteristics of the exoplanet atmospheres.

The goal of the Hubble observations is to find signs of life and/or habitability, such as water or carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Hubble will focus its cameras on the moon for the full six hours of the transit of Venus. So the transit of Venus is now being used to help us learn about other Solar Systems.

Venus is the second closest planet to the sun, after Mercury; Earth is third; Mars is fourth. That means only Mercury and Venus (and our moon) can cause eclipses from a vantage point on the Earth. But if we lived on Jupiter, Earth and Mars could also be seen (rarely!) transiting across the sun.

Here is the poor man's way to "see" the transit of the Earth across the sun: look with the Hubble Space Telescope at Jupiter in 2014, to see the reflected light of the sun from Jupiter's surface. (The light falling on Jupiter, and being reflected from there, is what we would see if we lived on Jupiter. The sun is too bright for Hubble to observe directly.)

Those Hubble measurements would reveal whether signs of life on Earth -- signs of us! -- are detectable in starlight as a planet with an atmosphere transits across the star.

Drake Deming, professor at the University of Maryland, points out that Earth can be seen transiting the sun from many vantage points throughout our galaxy. If there is intelligent life out there, maybe it is looking for signs of life on Earth from such transits.

You may have witnessed the last transit of Venus in 2004. But the one before that was visible only to your great-great-grandparents, on December 6, 1882.

As William Harkness (1837-1903), then director of the U.S. Naval Observatory, said on the eve of the 1882 transit: "There will be no other transits of Venus 'til the 21st century of our era has dawned upon the Earth. When the last transit occurred the intellectual world was awakening from the slumber of ages, and that wondrous scientific activity, which has led to our present advanced knowledge, was just beginning. What will be the state of science when the next transit season arrives God only knows. Not even our children's children will live to take part in the astronomy of that day."

บรมราชินีนาถ เสด็จฯถึง มีน.ส.ยิ่งลักษณ์ ชินวัตร นายกรัฐมนตรี นายนิวัฒน์ธำรง บุญทรงไพศาล รมต.ประจำสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี เฝ้าฯรับเสด็จ จาก นั้นเสด็จฯยังมณฑลที่ประดิษฐานพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ทรงจุดธูปเทียนเครื่องทองน้อยสักการะพระบรมสารีริกธาตุและทรงกล่าวนำแสดงตน เป็นพุทธมามกะ เวลาต่อมาเจ้าพนักงานพระราชพิธี ทูล เกล้าฯถวายเทียนชนวน สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทรงจุดโคมไฟฟ้า และทรงถือเทียนนั้นไว้ ต่อมาเชิญโคนเทียนไปตั้งที่ประดิษฐานพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ แล้วประทับรถไฟฟ้าไปยังหอนิทรรศการพระไตรปิฎก ทอดพระเนตรนิทรรศการพระไตรปิฎกปาฬิ ฉบับจุลจอมเกล้าบรมธัมมิกมหาราช ร.ศ.112 อักษรสยาม ก่อนเสด็จพระราชดำเนินกลับ พระเทพฯเสด็จฯพุทธมณฑล วัน เดียวกัน เวลา 16.00 น. สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เสด็จพระราชดำเนินโดยรถยนต์พระที่ นั่งมายังพุทธมณฑล อ.พุทธมณฑล จ.นคร ปฐม ทรงบำเพ็ญพระราชกุศลเนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา โดยมีคณะกรรมการจัดงานและประชาชนเฝ้าฯ รับเสด็จ ก่อนเสด็จฯยังมณฑล พิธีเททองหล่อพระหทัยพระพุทธเจ้า แล้วทรงเจิมแม่พิมพ์ต้นแบบเหรียญพระพุทธเจ้า ปางตรัสรู้ เนื้อทองทิพย์ 1 แท่นและเสด็จฯไปยังที่ตั้งองค์ผ้าป่า ต่อมาทรงจุดไฟจากโคมไฟฟ้าแล้วทรงถือ แล้วเสด็จฯ เวียนเทียนประทักษิณ ก่อนเสด็จฯกราบแท่นหน้าองค์พระประธานพุทธมณฑล ทรงนำสวดสรร เสริญคุณพระรัตนตรัย และเสด็จพระราช ดำเนินประทักษิณรอบองค์พระประธานพุทธมณฑลครบ 3 รอบ จากนั้นเสด็จฯประทับรถยนต์พระที่นั่งเสด็จพระราช ดำเนินกลับ พุทธศาสนิกชนแน่นสนามหลวง ก่อน หน้านี้เวลา 07.00 น. ม.ร.ว.สุขุมพันธุ์ บริพัตร ผู้ว่าฯกทม. พร้อมประชาชนร่วมทำบุญตักบาตรพระสงฆ์ 260 รูป เนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชาและร่วมงานสัปดาห์ส่งเสริมพระพุทธศาสนา ซึ่งมีการจัดกิจกรรมทางศาสนา ที่บริเวณมณฑลพิธีท้องสนาม หลวง นอกจากนี้ ยังมีพุทธศาสนิกชนจำนวนมากทยอยเดินทางมาร่วมงานกันแต่เช้าจนถึงช่วงค่ำของ วัน เพื่อฉลองพุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี แห่งการตรัสรู้ของพระพุทธเจ้า ผู้ สื่อข่าวรายงานว่าบรรยากาศการจัดงานสัปดาห์ส่งเสริมพระพุทธศาสนาภายในท้อง สนามหลวง ตั้งแต่ช่วงเช้ามีพระสงฆ์ จากวัดต่างๆ รวมไปถึงนักเรียนและประชา ชนจำนวนมากแต่งกายด้วยชุดขาวเดิน ทางเข้ามาร่วมกิจกรรมอย่างคับคั่ง โดยประชาชนส่วนใหญ่ให้ความสนใจสักการะและเวียนเทียนรอบพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ บริเวณมณฑปกลางท้องสนามหลวง รวมถึงชมนิทรรศการพระไตรปิฎก ร.ศ.112 และชมพระไตรปิฎกฉบับพิมพ์เล่มแรกของโลก นอกจากนี้กรมศาสนายังจัดพิธีกวนข้าวมธุปายาส(ข้าวทิพย์) เพื่อสืบสานประเพณีสำคัญเนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา นครพนมตักบาตรริมโขง สำหรับ บรรยากาศพุทธศาสนิกชนหลั่งไหลออกมาทำบุญในต่างจังหวัด เริ่มในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ที่จ.นครพนม นายอนุกูล ตังคณานุกูลชัย ผวจ.นครพนม นำประชาชนกว่า 2,000 คน นุ่งขาวห่มขาวและทำบุญตักบาตรหน้าตลาดอินโดจีน ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำโขง ส่วนบริเวณหน้าวัดพระธาตุพนมวรมหาวิหาร อ.ธาตุพนม ศูนย์รวมใจชาวภาคอีสานพุทธทำบุญตักบาตรพระภิกษุสามเณร 300 รูป จากนั้นมีกิจกรรมแข่งขันท่องสรภัญญะ สวดมนต์หมู่ จัดโต๊ะหมู่บูชาพระเทพวรมุนี ก่อนผวจ. นครพนมถวายผ้าป่าพุทธชยันตี และนำเวียนเทียนรอบพระธาตุพนม พุทธชยันตี - พุทธศาสนิกชนร่วมตักบาตรข้าวสารอาหารแห้ง แด่พระสงฆ์ 85 รูป บริเวณองค์พระพุทธไสยาสน์ วัดอินทประมูล จ.อ่างทอง เนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา พุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี เมื่อวันที่ 4 มิ.ย. สกลฯหลั่งไหลทำบุญ ขณะ ที่จ.บุรีรัมย์ นายคณิต เอี่ยมระหงษ์ ผวจ.บุรีรัมย์ พร้อมข้าราชการและประชาชนกว่า 1,000 คน แต่งกายด้วยชุดสีขาวร่วมกันทำบุญตักบาตรแก่พระภิกษุสามเณร ภายในวัดกลางพระอารามหลวง อ.เมือง เพื่อเป็นสิริมงคลแก่ตนเองและครอบครัวเนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา นอกจากนี้จังหวัดยังจัดกิจกรรมส่งเสริมพระพุทธศาสนา โดยมีพุทธศาสนิกชนร่วมกันสวดมนต์หมู่ทำนองสรภัญญะ ปฏิบัติธรรมและกล่าวแสดงตนเป็นพุทธมามกะ ก่อนพระราชปริยัติกวี เจ้าคณะจังหวัด แสดงธรรมเทศนา จ.สกลนคร นายจรินทร์ จักกะพาก ผวจ. สกลนคร เป็นประธานทำบุญตักบาตรพระสงฆ์ 160 รูป โดยมีพุทธศาสนิกชนพร้อมใจกันนุ่งขาวห่มขาวเข้าร่วมพิธีจำนวนมาก ซึ่งการทำบุญตักบาตรแบ่งออกเป็น 3 จุด จุดแรกบริเวณประติมากรรมประตูเมืองสกลนคร จุด 2 อยู่ที่วัดสะพานคำ และจุด 3 อยู่ที่ลานคนเมือง โดย แต่ละจุดมีชาวบ้านทยอยออกมาทำบุญตักบาตรอย่างต่อเนื่อง ส่วนบริเวณลานรวมใจไทสกลมีประชาชนนับหมื่นคนเดินทางมาร่วมในพิธีแห่โคมบัว บูชา เพื่อถวายเป็นพุทธบูชาที่วัดพระธาตุเชิงชุมวรวิหารด้วย ขณะที่วัดพระธาตุเชิงชุมวรวิหาร ประชาชนหลั่งไหลมานมัสการพระธาตุเชิงชุมอย่างเนืองแน่นเช่นกัน หนองคายแห่เข้าวัดถือศีล สำหรับ จ.หนองคาย นายวิรัตน์ ลิ้มสุวัฒน์ ผวจ.หนองคาย เป็นประธานในพิธีเปิดงานสัปดาห์ส่งเสริมพระพุทธศาสนาและตักบาตรเนื่องในวัน วิสาขบูชา วันสำคัญสากลของโลกและงานฉลองพุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี แห่งการตรัสรู้ของพระพุทธเจ้า ที่วัดโพธิ์ชัย โดยมีกิจกรรมสำคัญ ประกอบด้วย การปฏิบัติบูชาทั้งจังหวัด โดยสวมใส่เครื่องแต่งกายสีขาวและรักษาศีล รวมถึงทำบุญตักบาตร ถวายผ้าป่ามหากุศล การเจริญพระพุทธมนต์ การสวดมนต์ข้ามปี การจัดนิทรรศการด้านพระพุทธศาสนา การอบรมปฏิบัติธรรมของนักเรียนและเยาวชน การเดินวิ่งสมาธิ ส่วน จ.นครราชสีมา พล.อ.เปรม ติณสูลานนท์ ประธานองคมนตรีและรัฐบุรุษ เป็นประธานนำเหล่าข้าราชการและประชาชนกว่า 1,000 คน ร่วมพิธีเวียนเทียนรอบพระบรมสารีริกธาตุและถวายผ้าป่ามหากุศล โดยพล.อ.เปรมกล่าวว่า ถือเป็นปรากฏการณ์ที่น่ายกย่องสรรเสริญ หลังประชาชนมาพร้อมเพรียงกันและร่วมมือร่วมใจกัน ทั้งคณะสงฆ์ ภาครัฐและภาคเอกชน เพื่อช่วยกันสืบสานพระพุทธศาสนา พุทธศาสนาเป็นอุปกรณ์สำคัญของชาติ และขอให้นำคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าไปปฏิบัติ ศรีสะเกษตักบาตรแน่นวัด ที่ จ.ศรีสะเกษ นายประทีป กีรติเรขา ผวจ. ศรีสะเกษ พร้อมข้าราชการ พ่อค้าแม่ค้าและประชาชนทั่วไป ร่วมประกอบพิธีทำบุญตักบาตรและถวายภัตตาหารแก่พระสงฆ์ และรับฟังการแสดงพระธรรมเทศนาจากเจ้าคณะอำเภออุทุมพรพิสัย เพื่อเป็นการทำบุญเนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา ที่วัดหลวง สุมังคลาราม ต.เมืองใต้ อ.เมืองศรีสะเกษ โดยนายประทีปกล่าวว่า การร่วมกันทำบุญครั้งนี้นับเป็นการร่วมกันทำบุญที่ยิ่งใหญ่ของชาวพุทธ เพราะเป็นการฉลองพุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี เนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชาด้วย ขณะ ที่ จ.ขอนแก่น นายสมบัติ ตรีวัฒน์สุวรรณ ผวจ.ขอนแก่น นำข้าราชการ ประชาชน นักเรียนนักศึกษา ประมาณ 1,000 คน ร่วมกันสวมใส่เสื้อผ้าสีขาวและทำบุญตักบาตรข้าวสารอาหารแห้งแก่พระสงฆ์ 224 รูป เนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชาและร่วมงานฉลองพุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี แห่งการตรัสรู้ของพระพุทธเจ้า ที่บริเวณหน้าศาลากลางจังหวัด จากนั้นในช่วงเย็นประกอบพิธีเวียนเทียนและนั่งสมาธิสงบจิตใจ ส่วน บริเวณสถานที่ก่อสร้างพุทธมณฑล บ้านเต่านอ ต.ศิลา อ.เมืองขอนแก่น นายจารุพงศ์ เรืองสุวรรณ รมว.คมนาคม ประกอบพิธีตามโครงการ "ร้อยดวงใจ ร้อยบารมี ร่วมปลูกต้นไม้ฉลองพุทธชยันตี" ก่อนร่วมกันปลูกต้นราชพฤกษ์ ซึ่งเป็นต้นไม้ประจำจังหวัด 100 ต้น "สุรินทร์"สวดมนต์ 26 วัน ที่ จ.สุรินทร์ นายสุรศักดิ์ สิงห์หาร ปลัดเทศบาลตำบลเมืองแก อ.ท่าตูม จ.สุรินทร์ เปิดเผยว่า ตามที่สำนักงานกองทุนสนับ สนุนการสร้างเสริมสุขภาพ (สสส.) ร่วมกับหอจดหมายเหตุพุทธทาสฯ และ 24 องค์กร จัดโครงการ "ธรรมะ ทำมะ 2600 ปี แห่งการตื่น 26 วันเปลี่ยนชีวิต" โดยมีเป้าหมายเชิญชวนให้บุคคล ลด ละ เลิก ปรับเปลี่ยนนิสัยที่เป็นโทษ ทั้งต่อตัวเองและสังคม ในส่วนของเทศบาลฯ ริเริ่มโครงการ 19 ชุมชน 1,999 คน สวดมนต์ 26 วัน โดยรณรงค์ให้ชาวบ้านร่วมกันสวดมนต์เป็นระยะเวลา 26 วัน ตั้งแต่วันที่ 5-30 มิ.ย. นอกจากนี้ผู้สนใจยังสามารถตั้งปณิธานทำความดี 9 อย่างเสริมควบคู่กันไปด้วย เช่น สร้างนิสัยที่ดี ทำงานอาสาสมัคร ไม่ดื่มเหล้า ไม่เล่นการพนัน งดสูบบุหรี่ ขยันทำงาน เป็นคนดีของพ่อแม่และครอบครัว ซื่อสัตย์ ขยัน สามัคคี ฯลฯ ซึ่งมีผู้เข้าร่วมโครงการแล้ว 3 พันกว่าคน จากเดิมที่ตั้งเป้าเพียง 1,999 คน คุ้มกัน - ทหาร ติดอาวุธครบมือยืนรักษาความปลอดภัยให้พระสงฆ์และพุทธศาสนิกชน ขณะเวียนเทียนตอนกลางวัน ในวันวิสาขบูชา ที่วัดหลักห้า ต.สะเตง อ.เมือง จ.ยะลา เมื่อวันที่ 4 มิ.ย. กาฬสินธุ์ร่วมฉลองพุทธชยันตี ที่ จ.กาฬสินธุ์ นายสมศักดิ์ สุวรรณสุจริต ผวจ.กาฬสินธุ์ พร้อมประชาชนกว่า 20,000 คน ร่วมตักบาตรถวายข้าวสารอาหารแห้งแก่พระสงฆ์กว่า 2,000 รูป ก่อนร่วมถือศีลปฏิบัติธรรมวันสุดท้ายในการ ฉลองพุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี นอกจากนี้ ตามพุทธสถานและวัดชื่อดังของจังหวัดหลายแห่งเนืองแน่นไปด้วยประชาชนที่มา ร่วมทำบุญ รวมถึงเข้าปฏิบัติธรรม โดยเฉพาะที่วัดประชานิยม วัดป่าพุทธมงคลหรือวัดพุทธคยา วัดป่ามัชฉิมวาส อ.เมืองกาฬสินธุ์ มีพุทธศาสนิกชนสนใจเข้าร่วมปฏิบัติธรรมระยะสั้นจำนวนมาก เชียงใหม่สรงน้ำพระธาตุ สำหรับ บรรยากาศออกมาทำบุญในภาคเหนือ ที่ จ.เชียงใหม่ นายฤทธิพงศ์ เตชะพันธุ์ รอง ผวจ.เชียงใหม่ เป็นประธานงานขบวนแห่พระบรมสารีริกธาตุ เนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา ที่วัดวงค์เมธา บ้านหนองโขง ม.3 ต.ขุนคง อ.หางดง โดย อบต.ขุนคง ร่วมกับชาวบ้าน สร้างรางไม้สักลงรักปิดทอง เพื่อใช้สำหรับสรงน้ำพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ โดยมีนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งชาวไทยและต่างชาติเดินทางมาร่วมงานจำนวนมาก ซึ่งประชาชนบางส่วนนำน้ำมะพร้าวมาสรง ซึ่งถือเป็นน้ำที่บริสุทธิ์ เพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคล และรำลึกถึงองค์พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ที่ จ.พะเยา นายไมตรี อินทุสุต ผวจ. พะเยา พร้อมข้าราชการและประชาชนกว่า 1,000 คน ทำบุญตักบาตรพระสงฆ์ 108 รูป บริเวณท่าน้ำริมกว๊านพะเยา หน้าอนุสาวรีย์พ่อขุนงำเมือง อ.เมืองพะเยา โดยนายไมตรีกล่าวว่า จังหวัดและหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องจัดงานเทศกาลวันวิสาขบูชา โดยมีกิจกรรมสำคัญ ทั้งวิชาการวันวิสาขบูชาของศูนย์พระพุทธศาสนาวันอาทิตย์จังหวัดพะเยา 75 ศูนย์ ซึ่งเน้นเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนา การสร้างความรักและความสามัคคีของคนในชาติ กิจกรรมการบรรยายธรรมและประกวดสวดมนต์หมู่ ประกวดจัดโต๊ะหมู่บูชาและตั้งองค์ผ้าป่ามหากุศลพุทธชยันตี ที่วัดศรีโคมคำ จากนั้นจะเวียนเทียนทางน้ำด้วยการนั่งเรือพายรอบวัดติโลกอาราม กลางกว๊านพะเยา "สุโขทัย"ใส่บาตรพระ 2,600 รูป ขณะ ที่ จ.สุโขทัย นายจักริน เปลี่ยนวงษ์ ผวจ.สุโขทัย พร้อมประชาชนกว่า 5,000 คน ร่วมทำบุญตักบาตรข้าวสารอาหารแห้งแก่พระสงฆ์สามเณร 2,600 รูป บริเวณเกาะกลางแผ่นดินรูปหัวใจ ต.บ้านกล้วย อ.เมืองสุโขทัย พร้อมฉลองพุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี แห่งการประสูติ ตรัสรู้ ปรินิพพานขององค์สัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า เพื่อระลึกถึงพระปัญญาคุณ พระบริสุทธิคุณที่เผยแผ่พระธรรมคำสั่งสอน ตลอดทั้งการสืบทอดพระพุทธศาสนา เพื่อให้ปรากฏแก่คนรุ่นหลังและความเป็นสิริมงคลแก่ตนเองและครอบครัว ที่ จ.พิษณุโลก นายชัยโรจน์ มีแดง ผวจ.พิษณุโลก พร้อมประชาชนนุ่งขาวห่มขาวทำบุญตักบาตร ฟังเทศน์ฟังธรรม เนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา ที่วัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุ วรมหาวิหาร รวมทั้งยังมีชาวบ้านเดินทางมาร่วมกราบไหว้ขอพรพระพุทธชินราช พระพุทธรูปคู่บ้านคู่เมืองของจังหวัด เพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลแก่ชีวิต นอกจากนี้ยังมีนิทรรศการโต๊ะหมู่บูชา การแสดงนิทรรศ การพุทธประวัติของพระพุทธเจ้า อีกทั้งยังเปิดโอกาสให้พุทธศาสนิกชนร่วมทำบุญซื้อแผ่นทองหล่อพระพุทธชินราช จำลองด้วย กรุงเก่าแห่ไหว้พระ 9 วัด ส่วนพุทธ ศาสนิกชนในภาคกลาง ที่ จ.อ่างทอง นายวิศว ศะศิสมิต ผวจ. อ่างทอง พร้อมข้าราชการและประชาชนกว่า 500 คน ร่วมทำบุญตักบาตรกับพระสงฆ์ 85 รูป รอบองค์พระพุทธไสยาสน์ ซึ่งเป็นพระนอนที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศ วัดอินทประมูล อ.โพธิ์ทอง เนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา และถวายเป็นพระราชกุศลแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ โดยทุกคนร่วมกันแต่งชุดขาวและตั้งจิตอธิษฐาน ที่ จ.พระนครศรีอยุธยา ประชาชนพร้อมใจกันแต่งกายชุดขาวและเดินทางไปทำบุญตักบาตรตามวัดต่างๆ อย่างเนืองแน่น โดยเฉพาะที่วัดกษัตราธิราชวรวิหาร ต.บ้านป้อม อ.พระนครศรีอยุธยา พบประชาชนเดินทางมาร่วมทำบุญจำนวนมาก นอกจากนี้ ยังมีนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งที่เป็นชาวต่างชาติและคนหนุ่มสาวพาลูกหลานมาไหว้พระ ตามโครงการ "ไหว้พระ 9 วัด อยุธยามหามงคล" อาทิ วัดพนัญเชิง วัดใหญ่ชัยมงคล วิหารพระมงคลบพิตร วัดหน้าพระเมรุ วัดศาลาปูน วัดกษัตราธิราช วัดท่าการ้อง วัด พุทไธศวรรย์ และวัดตูม ส่งผลให้การจราจรบางจุดเคลื่อนตัวได้ช้าและติดขัด ส่วนบริเวณอนุสรณ์ สถานแห่งความจงรักภักดี ทุ่งหันตรา ต.หันตรา พระเทพรัตนากร เจ้าคณะจังหวัด พร้อมด้วยนายวิทยา ผิวผ่อง ผวจ.พระนครศรีอยุธยา นำพระสงฆ์ 209 รูป เจริญพระพุทธมนต์ หลังจากนั้นประกอบพิธีทอดผ้าป่ามหากุศล พุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี และเวียนเทียนรอบองค์พระประจำชนมวารของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว "ลพบุรี"ร่วมเดิน-วิ่งสมาธิ ขณะ ที่ จ.ลพบุรี นายฉัตรชัย พรหมเลิศ ผวจ.ลพบุรี เป็นประธานเปิดกิจกรรมเดิน-วิ่ง สมาธิ วิสาขพุทธบูชาเพื่อสุขภาพ บริเวณสำนักงานเทศบาลตำบลท่า ศาลา อ.เมืองลพบุรี โดยมีข้าราชการและประชาชนกว่า 2,000 คน เข้าร่วมกิจกรรม จากนั้นนายรังสรรค์ สละชีพ นายกเทศ มนตรีตำบลท่าศาลา กล่าวว่า กิจกรรมเดิน-วิ่งสมาธิ วิสาขพุทธบูชาเพื่อสุขภาพ เพื่อส่งเสริมการออกกำลังกายด้วยการเดินและวิ่งให้เป็นที่แพร่หลาย จากนั้นจะร่วมกันเวียนเทียนรอบพระอุโบสถวัดหัวช้าง เพื่อถวายเป็นพุทธบูชาและความเป็นสิริมงคลของชีวิต ที่ จ.สิงห์บุรี นายพิเชษฐ ไพบูลย์ศิริ ผวจ.สิงห์บุรี พร้อมข้าราชการและประชาชนกว่า 1,000 คน เข้าร่วมทำบุญตักบาตรกับพระสงฆ์ 86 รูป ที่วัดพระนอนจักรสีห์วรวิหาร อ.เมืองสิงห์บุรี เนื่องในวันวิสาขบูชา "งานฉลองพุทธชยันตี 2600 ปี แห่งการตรัสรู้ของพระพุทธเจ้า ชาวสิงห์บุรีรวมใจถวายพระพร" จากนั้นร่วมประกอบพิธีเวียนเทียน เพื่อบูชาและระลึกถึงพระคุณของพระพุทธเจ้า Oops! Yingluck, Suu Kyi, WEF et al

Thailand hosted the World Economic Forum for East Asia with all the smiles and pretty faces last week.

Literally, that was all this government was contended, or rather able, to do. During the three-day event, Thailand's political future was also held hostage by the PheuThai's efforts to rush through the National Assembly the amnesty efforts disguised as national reconciliation bills. The ruling party could have delayed the deliberation by a few days to allow the WEF conference t to proceed without the kind of headlines grappling and confusions. While the Thai leaders kept on reiterating the political stability and great prospects to the WEF participants, their country was confronting one of the most serious crisis since 1932. Unfortunately, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra did not have a clue how it would link to the WEF. Her head and heart were not there in the first place. The instruction for her brother, Thaksin Shinwatra, was far more important - the government must go all out to push through the bills now. The result was disastrous for all to see with the possibility of another round of bloody polarisation. Instead of headlines featuring Thailand's economic positive outlooks and resurgence, the news of the days was zeroed in on political disorders and of course, leadership inept. That explained why the WEF, which supposed to be a foremost show case of Thailand's economic development and prospects after the last year's flood, was turned into cheap theatrical acts and public relations flops.

The government's economic advisory team also did a sloppy job because the prime minister's speech at the opening WEF session was mediocre and without any vision. She highlighted Thailand and connectivity along the North-South corridor and touched briefly on the Dawei Deep Sea Port development but paid more attention on the various high-speed train links from in Northeast Thailand and Laos. Her speech was mainly focused on the connectivity under the APT (Asean plus three) framework, which did not include the development of Dawei as a matter of fact. For the premier audience and the short time available, she should have stressed Thailand's strategic thinking on the whole comprehensive connectivity plan - with Thailand as the hub - agreed at the East Asia Summit in Bali last November. After all under the EAS frame, East Asia means Asean, India, US, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, China Japan and South Korea. This framework links India to both the mainland and archipelagic Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia with hundreds of infrastructural projects.

Following her speech, during the questions and answers session with Klaus Schwab, the WEF founder, other Asean colleagues from Indonesia, Vietnam and Laos did well in replying the question posed Klaus on their dreams of Asean in the next five years. They were wise responding in their own languages without stumbling in the choices of words in Indonesian, Vietnamese and Laotian respectively. The interpreters gave precise English versions of their answers. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wanted to see Asean that is economic and politically strong and integrated so that it can contribute to the global community. Prime Minister Nguyen Trans Dung reiterated the importance of attaining the three pillars of Asean Community and benefits it would bring while Laotian Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong focused on narrowing of the developing gap between the Asean members and their unity. These were excellent answers based on the theme of connectivity which they earlier spoke. Only Yingluck, who chose to speak in English, did poorly. Her few English sentences were awful and incoherent as she had no idea what she was talking about even though she had just finished reading the speech about Asean and its connectivity a while ago. Indeed, she could have repeated those few sentences again that it would easily make up the whole answer. Instead, she was rumbling on Asean without any focus. Worse of all, she thought that the citizens of 10-Asean members, estimated 600 millions, represented half of the world's population.

While the host was a loser, the greatest winner of WEF was the last-minute decision to have Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, replacing President Thein Sein, as one of the speakers towards the end. The opposition party leader from Myanmar was given the full attention and best Thai hospitality from the Thai government and the WEF organiser. It was strange that former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who last year invited the WEF to hold its event here in the first place, was not invited to speak as the Thai opposition party leader. Abhisit, a WEF veteran, could have helped the government articulating challenges Thailand is facing at the moment. Sadden still, she forgot the day when she expressed appreciation of Abhisit's early acknowledgement of poll defeats - just a few hours after the polling day closed - last July, immediately quelling down coup rumors. But this time around Yingluck did not have the same decency and openness to reciprocate.

With the host in disarray, the WEF turned out to be a God-send opportunity for Suu Kyi to demonstrate her intelligence and charm and uplifting Myanmar's profile. Her words of wisdom and grace on display during her first foreign visit have made strong impressions on the top business leaders and international community at large. It was not surprising that the WEF on East Asia next year will be held in her country. As such, it is a big stamp of approval of confidence and fine outlook for the country, which just a few months ago was shunned by the global community. It is Suu Kyi's magic that has generated such goodwill and warm reception.

When she spoke and met with the migrant workers in fishing industries in Mahachai, Samut Sakhon, she was touching on one of the most sensitive issues on Thai-Myanmar relations. More than 40,000 Myanmarese are working days and nights - both registered and unregistered for the fishing trawlers and markets based in this coastal province. Throughout the past decades, nobody paid any attention to their plights as modern slaves working for minimum wages facing with daily abuses and corruptions due to lack of law enforcement. She wisely urged her fellow citizens to understand Thai judicial systems and encourage them to educate their children during their stay in Thailand to prepare for the future. She has done her homework well. At the WEF, she also called on the international community to help her country's youth for better and balanced education and development - something that the Thai leaders neglected and did not understand.

Of course, it is political incorrect these days to comment negatively on Yingluck's hollowness because she looks good and has never did any wrong or controversial as it would be considered an assault on Thai woman as a whole. To her supporters, she is still an angel who yields no harms and very pleasant to look in. It is her enemies who are bias and evil-minded failing to see her greatness and the confidence Thaksin bestows her. Although the WEF did not benefit the host in any substantive way, it did however provide a rare opportunity for the Thais in general and Yingluck's supporters in particular, to distinguish the leadership quality between their lady and The Lady.

Diamond Jubilee: River Thames pageant to honour Queen

Around 20 members of the royal family will travel in the luxurious red and gold royal barge

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend will reach its peak later on Sunday with a colourful River Thames pageant.

Hundreds of thousands of people will line the banks of the river to watch the Queen cruise past on a royal barge escorted by a 1,000-strong flotilla.
The event to mark 60 years of her reign promises to be the most spectacular nautical event in London for 350 years.
Millions more Britons are expected to take part in Jubilee parties, outdoor concerts and fairs across the country.

On a waterway which has played a pivotal role in the history of Britain since the days of the Romans, a noisy, theatrical extravaganza is planned and promised.
Along the Thames - London's liquid asset, according to one of the organisers - a procession of varied vessels will pass by. There will be rowing boats, steam boats, Dutch barges and Dunkirk little ships.
In their midst, will be 20 royals afloat. The Queen's luxury barge will be decorated with almost 1,000 cut flowers.
On the banks of the seven-mile route - which will pass under 13 bridges - will be some anti-monarchists wanting to protest.
But most will want to participate in a spectacle the like of which London has not seen since the reign of Charles II.

The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh and other senior royals will travel from Albert Bridge to Tower Bridge aboard a lavishly adapted royal barge - the Spirit of Chartwell - decorated with almost 10,000 cut flowers.

Dunkirk small ships As the pageant begins at 11:30 BST with mustering at Hammersmith and Battersea bridges, the Thames barrier will be lowered to slow the river's flow.
The spectacle, along a seven-mile stretch, will end some six hours later when the last boat passes Tower Bridge.
Adam Kerr, the skipper of a restored 19th Century Cornish fishing lugger, the Barnabas, sailed 400 nautical miles to take part.
"It's going to be wonderful, I think it's going to be a pretty colourful spectacle," he told the BBC.
"I'm sure they're very worried about the security of boats crashing into each other, I think we'll be okay - we're a pretty well controlled boat, good crew and nice engine to drive us along."

The £10m cost of the event has been met by private donations but the security costs will be paid for by the taxpayer.
The anti-monarchy group, Republic, has said it will hold a demonstration against what they call an unelected, unaccountable monarch.
BBC weather forecaster John Hammond said pageant watchers should wrap up with waterproofs and wind proofs amid temperatures of around 11C.
He said party-goers in most of England and Wales should expect cloud and the threat of rain, whilst Scotland and Northern Ireland would be dry with some sunshine.

Rainy weather was not enough to deter hundreds of people who camped out overnight along the Thames to claim the best spots to view the flotilla.

A collection of small ships used to rescue stranded troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940 will also take part in the river event.
It will be led by the Motor Torpedo boat 102, the flagship of the officer who co-ordinated the evacuation on the scene.
A boat carrying eight specially cast Jubilee bells will lead the water-borne procession, and churches along the river bank will return the peel as it passes.
Thousands of people will watch the flotilla from Battersea Park, at a festival celebrating the music, food, fashion and art from the past 60 years which sold out several weeks ago.
BBC Big Screens will be transmitting live BBC coverage of the pageant in 22 locations around the UK including Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol , Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Middlesbrough.
Around the country, a community initiative called the Big Jubilee Lunch will encourage people to share food with neighbours and friends in street parties or at picnics.
In central London, Piccadilly is being closed for the first time in its history to allow 500 tables to be set up.
Almost 9,500 road closure applications have been submitted across England and Wales, with Hertfordshire topping the street party list with 451 even licences requested. A street party in Morecambe, Lancashire, will be aiming to enter the record books for the longest street party by beating the 1.5 miles (2.4 km) event held in Combe Martin, Devon, for the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002.
Prime Minister David Cameron will attend a Jubilee party in Downing Street.
A third of all of Scotland's street party applications have been made in Edinburgh, with 10 official events scheduled across the city.
On Monday, a concert will be held in front of Buckingham Palace in the area surrounding the Queen Victoria Memorial, with performances from artists including Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Elton John, Jessie J, JLS and Ed Sheeran.
When it ends at 22:00 BST, more than 4,000 beacons are due to be lit in the UK and around the world.
The Queen will light the UK's last beacon - the National Beacon - at about 22:30 BST, to be followed by a firework display at Buckingham Palace.
