Home on the range

Home on the range

De-stress at a quiet farm just outside farm where, the owners say, even the hammocks smile

Visitors to the northern province of Mae Hong Son almost always choose to stay in Pai, a small town that offers a wide range of accommodation from small rooms in the town centre to sprawling sleek resorts overlooking rice fields.
One of the best choices is Bueng Pai Farm, just 10-minutes ride out of town. It's run by Ron and Orn, a young Thai couple who've built 15 bungalows next to a large lake. The pair used to be in charge of Sun Hut but their new place is infinitely superior and much more attractive than the other accommodation available in this small district.
The bungalows have high thatched roofs and are set at a decent distance from each other, allowing maximum privacy. There's a veranda and hammock and guests can even fish in the lake if they wish. The rooms are quite spacious and come with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. Bamboo plywood covers the wall offering a natural touch and the high ceiling gives a great breeze at night.
There is no television except in the big two-bedroom bungalow at the side of the lake. Some bungalows have a view of the rice fields while the two-storey cottage looks out over the green countryside. The largest is known as the Honeymoon Suite and boast an extra large room with en-suite bathroom and hot shower, television, DVD player and a fridge. Wherever you stay, wireless Internet access is provided free, although the signal is not so stable.
Bueng Pai Farm serves a great breakfast from 8 to 11.30am, prepared from organic ingredients grown on the farm. The menu has plenty of Thai and western flavours and vegans and vegetarians can rest assured there are no preservatives or MSG. Orn's home-made muesli contains 25 different ingredients and her fruit yoghurt is so good that it's the most requested breakfast by guests of Bueng Pai Farm.
After midday, a newly built kitchen is open for guests to cook their own food. Fridge, rice cooker, microwave, stove and cookware are provided in very clean condition. Guests can shop for their own food at the local fresh market, which makes a nice change from having to travel to Pai town to dine out.
A small swimming pool with chemical-free water is located just next to the restaurant and not far from the lake-side library. The library is actually the best place to chill out on a lazy day.
Guests don't have to love fishing to stay here as there many other great draws, but many do come to fish. The large lake contains more than 20 varieties of fish, and everything you need for fishing is available there from rods, reels, bait and even a fishing lesson and some philosophy from Ron.
Tranquillity and serenity are precious at this place and that makes Bueng Pai Farm the perfect place to unwind before returning back to the big city.
