UNESCO will assist Myanmar in listing
Bagan Archeological Zone as a world heritage site, sources from the
Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library of the Ministry
of Culture said.
U Kyaw Oo Lwin, the director general of
the department of archaeology, national museum and library said that
UNESCO has been aiding the ministry for over 20 years in preserving the
archeological site with over 3,000 temples and pagodas.
A delegation led by UNESCO
Director-General Irina Bokova arrived in Myanmar on Tuesday and
travelled to Bagan on the following day. She visited some temples and
pagodas, the excavation site of the Bagan Palace and the Bagan
Archeological Museum.
During her visit to Bagan, U Kyaw, Oo
Lwin called upon UNESCO to contribute technical expertise for
conservation, restoration and the nomination process.
Cooperation with Myanmar’s Department of
Archaeology, National Museum and Library was recently re-engaged with a
USD$530,000 project on “Building Capacity to Safeguard Cultural
Heritage in Myanmar.”
A survey mission will be undertaken this
year to Bagan to conduct an assessment that will form the basis for an
on-site mural conservation training course.
The site, which counts some 15 villages
within its 42 square kilometers, is also threatened by pressures on land
use for development and tourism. Inscription on the World Heritage Site
could increase commercialization while promoting more sustainable
management of this unique cultural landscape.
In 1996, the ministry applied to UNESCO
to list Bagan as a world heritage site and has been working on resolving
various management issues in Bagan and to elaborate a more systematic
plan for the site’s preservation and conservation.
UNESCO will also assist the ministry in
listing three ancient Pyu cities of Sri Ksetra, Beikthano and Halin as
world heritage sites.
