Indo-Burmese border town to dedicate Suu Kyi statue

New Delhi (Mizzima) – An upper-body plaster statue of Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be installed at Moreh, an Indo-Burmese border town, said a Manipur-based organization.

The statue unveiling ceremony will be held at the hall of Moreh correspondents’ association on Wednesday August 8, the 24^th anniversary of the Burmese pro-democracy uprising.

The statue will be installed at the social science study center in Moreh, a member of the Solidarity Committee for Burma’s Democracy (SCBD), told Mizzima.

People from both sides of the border can attend, he said.

The SCBD, led by Ksh. Santa and Com. L. Sontin Kumar (a local leader of the Communist Party of India), is made up of local political leaders who are interested in Burmese affairs, lawyers, former officials and groups that support the Burmese pro-democracy movement.

A local resident said placing the statue in Moreh allows people living in Manipur and in Burma to view the statue.

The SCBD, in cooperation with Burmese pro-democracy groups, supports political discussions, speeches and events in support of democratic reforms in Burma.
